Can They Hold Up In A Snow Storm? If you’ve ever seen footage of a hurricane passing through a city in Florida there is a good chance that in the footage there are some asphalt shingle roofs flying all over the place. This type of exhibition has certainly given shingle roofs a bad rap. Around here they are probably not going to have to be dealing with such heavy winds. Obviously, the biggest concern is that they’ll be able to hold the multiple feet of snow that we can get at any particular time around here. If you go out and google asphalt shingle roofs one of the first things that are going to come up is that they are, for the most part, the least durable type of roof. How less durable is less durable though? A better question may be how many years do you need to get out of the roof? Some sources will let you know that they can hold up for 20 years plus. Do you even plan on owning the home for that long? For the most part, you could start seeing some trouble in 4 or 5 years even with some of the best shingles. Shingle Roof Benefits Other than the price tag shingle roofs can be a good idea for other reasons. Shingles are not heavy at all. Therefore, when you add the weight of the shingles plus the potential weight of the snow or the debris that falls on top of them you won’t have a roof caving in on you. With some other types of roofs such as tile roofs, you may not be so lucky.
